Avaelis increasing project delivery maturity for a client by introducing an Agile project management capability
The Task
The client’s executive management team engaged Avaelis when they were seeking to reduce the risk profile of a $2 million application development project by introducing agility into their project delivery approach. At the time of the engagement, the client experienced a number of challenges:
- Sensitivity within the organisation due to previously failed large-scale IT project
- Complex business with changing business requirements
- Geographically distributed teams with ineffective engagement process
- Resource and scope management challenges
The Approach
Together with our client, Avaelis recognised that there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to Agile project management. Taking Avaelis’ Agile framework as a starting point, the approach taken was as follows:
- A series of workshops and interviews to identify pain points and business drivers
- A series of training workshops introducing the Agile manifesto, terminology and methodologies
- Develop tailored Agile processes, ceremonies and templates based on Avaelis’ Agile framework
- Develop an iterative product development roadmap which emphasised early delivery features and early user adoption
- Allocate Agile roles and responsibilities to the team and provide tailored training
- Individual and group coaching utilising a certified coach to enable the team to adopt Agile within a short period of time
Deliverables
The final deliverable was a self-sufficient Agile project team which translated into an in-house Agile project delivery capability. Along the way, a number of report templates (Big Visible Charts), Agile ceremonies, a decentralised stakeholder engagement process and a clearly defined scope management process were developed and all associated training and coaching delivered.
The Result
Three months into the project the team had adopted the new Agile work practices and was able to achieve consistent, measurable and predictable output per iteration. Six months into the project, the client’s project management maturity had measurably increased by 0.75 on a five point scale.
In addition, our client reported that:
- Stakeholder satisfaction was up due to the improved national engagement process
- Product adoption was the best for any application project the client had done before.
- Team collaboration had improved.
